CCTV SYSTEM PLANNER

Complete your CCTV setup

Choose how many cameras you need. A compatible DVR and surveillance hard disk are optional additions, not required purchases.

01

How many CCTV cameras?

Start with the number you want to install.

For analogue CCTV systems. IP cameras normally require an NVR rather than a DVR.

02

Recording preferences (optional)

Adjust these only if you want a surveillance hard disk recommendation.

Estimate assumes continuous 24 hour recording and includes a 20% capacity allowance. Actual needs depend on resolution, compression, frame rate, scene activity and recorder settings.

03

Suggested recording equipment

Recommendations only. You decide whether to include either item.

Recorder channels describe how many cameras can connect. Disk recommendations are estimates and must be checked against the recorder's HDD bays and supported drive capacities.

HELP & ADVICE

CCTV FAQs

How many CCTV cameras do I need?

Count the entrances, driveway, garden and any other areas you need to monitor. Position cameras to reduce blind spots and consider spare recorder channels if you may expand later.

What is the difference between a DVR and an NVR?

A DVR is normally used with compatible analogue CCTV cameras. An NVR is normally used with network IP cameras. Some hybrid recorders support both, but you should check the exact camera signal format and recorder specifications before buying.

Are bullet, dome and turret cameras different?

Bullet cameras are easy to spot and can act as a visible deterrent. Dome housings can offer a discreet, protected finish. Turret cameras are compact and easy to aim. Weather protection, night vision and image quality depend on the particular model, not just the shape.

Is a higher megapixel camera always better?

Higher resolution can capture more detail, but lens choice, camera positioning, lighting and sensor performance matter too. Higher resolutions can also need more storage or bandwidth. Choose according to the scene you need to record.

Will the cameras record clearly at night?

Check the camera’s infrared range and real night-time image quality. Infrared footage is commonly black and white; colour night recording usually needs sufficient available light or additional illumination. Do not rely on resolution alone.

How do I choose the correct hard disk?

Choose the number of days you want to retain and consider the cameras’ actual recording bitrates, compression and whether they record continuously or on motion. Use a surveillance-rated drive and check the recorder’s supported capacity and number of HDD bays. The calculator gives an estimate, not a guaranteed number of days.

Are power supplies and cables included?

Not automatically. Analogue cameras normally need compatible video cabling and power, while IP cameras usually use network cabling and may support PoE. Check cable distances, connectors, recorder inputs and what is included with each product before ordering.

Can I view my CCTV on my phone?

Many recorders support remote viewing, but this depends on the model, network setup and app. Use a strong unique password, keep firmware updated and enable additional account security where available. Only enable internet access if you need it.

Can a home CCTV camera record the pavement or neighbours?

Aim cameras at your own property wherever possible. If your system records beyond your property boundary, UK data protection rules may apply. Consider privacy masking, appropriate signs, secure storage and keeping footage only as long as necessary. See the Information Commissioner’s Office guidance for details.

A PRACTICAL BUYING GUIDE

Choose your cameras with confidence

The camera count is only the beginning. These six checks will help you choose equipment that works together and covers the areas that matter.

  1. Decide what you need to see

Start with entrances and areas where people approach your property. One wide angle camera may cover a space, but a more focused view may be needed to capture recognisable detail.

  2. Choose camera style and location

A turret or dome may suit a porch or under an eave, while a visible bullet camera may suit a wall or driveway. For outdoor installation, check the individual camera’s weather rating and operating temperature.

  3. Check the lens and image quality

A wide lens covers more area but gives less detail of distant objects. A narrower or adjustable lens can help with gates, paths or entrances. Compare sample footage in daylight and darkness.

  4. Match cameras to your recorder

For traditional analogue CCTV, confirm the camera output format and resolution are supported by the DVR. IP cameras generally need a compatible NVR and network setup. Choose 4, 8, 16 or 32 channels according to your camera count.

  5. Plan how long to keep recordings

Select your retention period and estimated bitrate in the planner above. Then confirm the recommended hard disk fits the recorder’s drive bay and capacity limits. Continuous and motion recording can use very different amounts of storage.

  6. Check installation and privacy

Plan power, cable routes, viewing access and safe mounting positions. Secure the recorder with an updated password and firmware. Avoid unnecessarily filming neighbours or public areas.

Before you order

Confirm camera and recorder compatibility, the maximum hard disk capacity, power requirements, and the cables or accessories your installation needs. Our planner provides guidance, not a guarantee that every product will work together.
